yeah, you don't want to be a marine biologist. you meet some cool people in florida, but it's not worth the loans. (you're on the right track with the veganism though.)

you think you're not being taken seriously at that health food store, but just stick it out. who knows, maybe they will promote you to baker. you give up on things too quickly. don't quit and go to college. i know you like plants and all, but just read books for that. the debt is REALLY not worth it for the kind of jobs you can get with that degree. but if you do decide to go to school, at least stick with only one major. you really don't want to be a landscape architect. save yourself a year or two of your time and stick with horticulture. also, take geology in your freshman year instead of your senior year. it's some cool stuff.

wait until late april 2003 to join any dating websites. the one that matters is veggiedate.org. widen your search to NJ and include jewish in your search terms. look for the one in the gilligan hat. yeah, the one with the big beautiful smile and gleaming eyes. that's the one. everyone else is just a waste of time. (NJ really isn't all that bad, and he's totally not religious.)

my gaming clan is holding it's 4th holiday fundraiser for child's play. the prize list is huge this year! sorry for the late announcement, as the deadline for donations is this saturday at midnight EST, but that deadline can be broken if needs be. the drawing will be held at 3:00 on sunday, so if you donate by noon on sunday it'll be okay. :-) you'll still get your raffle tickets.

we're only 2/3 of the way to our goal, and we only have 2 days left. :-(

somehow... i received a $25 LJ gift certificate.

luckily it's a code, so it's most likely not tied to my (permanent) account, so i'm giving it to scott.

i just find it humorous that someone gave a perm. account holder a GC. hehe. (i suppose i can use it for one of my comms, but none of them need upgrades at the moment.)

anyway, whoever it was, thanks! it still goes to the household! :-)

well, i finished my internship last friday. i'm glad i did it. it's hard work. gives me a huge appreciation for machines and people who farm for a living.

in my dreams, i always said i'd like to have a sanctuary on my potential farm, and hooboy is taking care of animals hard work. the animals part was harder work than the plants. if we do save some lives, it'll have to only be one species, and scott really likes chickens, so we'd likely gravitate toward them. we also would not have any roosters. (for one, that'd mean the eggs are fertilized, and so it squicks both myself and scott out that when people use eggs from small organic farms with roosters, they're eating genuine potential baby chickies instead of just an ovulation that'd be discarded otherwise. also, boy oh boy was mr. chatterbox an asshole.

the duck house and sheep house got gross so incredibly quickly. ugh! if we have a pond and ducks come to visit, and possibly decide to live there for a while, that's fine. but i will not have a house for them. they'll just have to take their chances with predators. (but chances are the farm'll be surrounded by fencing, and it'll also most likely be urban/suburban. not rural, so far less likely to harbor predators anyway. but ohboy, foxes are oh so adorable.)

in other news, we're going to seattle and portland next week. i'm reeeeeally excited. i can't wait to try mighty-o donuts, and go to sweetpea (and the other shops in the vegan mini-mall) i'm afraid once i go to vegan mecca, i might not want to come back. (at least the employment opportunities are lacking out in PDX, so that's one thing to come back here for.) if you're out there and wanna meet up, lemme know! yay!

and finally, i have a facebook account. i don't feel comfortable linking to it from here, especially in a public post, so if you know my name, you can find me. or feel free to send me a private message with your account, and i'll add you that way.
also, the podcast has a page. http://www.facebook.com/veganreview

well, i have a month and a half left. it'll be nice when it's over and i can sleep at home all the time. at least the ticks seem to have dissappeared or gone elsewhere. (i'm still going to check myself nightly. i'm not taking any chances.)

tomorrow is the last time in at least a month (possibly in a month and a half) that i'd be able to come home. bosslady is going on her vacation from the 23rd to aug 9th, so that means the earliest i'd be able to come home would be the 15th, but that might also be when she's heading back out to spend time with her son's family and potential new grandbaby.

watching the house and being in charge of all the animals is going to be a little scary, but i can do it. it'll be a bit lonely. i'll make sure to bring a bunch of movies up to watch during down time. (if you're in the area, come on by.)

the past few weeks have been kind of annoying, because their modem or router or something has been hiccuping, and i'd lose access to the internet for days at a time. you never know how much you rely on something until it's gone. the town also contested a cell tower being added, so the cell reception is atrocious as well. luckily they have a 2nd phone line that i can use. (but they also use it as a fax machine, so i am never sure when it's a fax calling in or if it's scott, so he only calls at 8:00 pm. haha! other times, i just let it ring. but at least there's an answering machine incorporated in to the fax machine, so if it's an important call, he can always start to leave a message, and i can pick up if i'm there.)

tomorrow we're going to go to a potluck for all the farm interns/workers etc. to get to know each other. i kind-of didn't want to go because it's an hour away on a saturday night, and i didn't want to have to spend all that time driving, but then i figured it'd be good to get to know other potential farmers. i have a feeling that i'm not the right person to be a farmer, but i would definitely want to own a farm and maybe run the farmstand/vegan grocery store/bakery/cafe. this experience also helped me realise i don't want to rescue many different types of animals. if scott wants to rescue chickens, that's fine, but that's it. nobody else. it's just way too much work. also, it sounds like you have to have farm animals a certain distance from a cafe/restaurant, so that might present a problem. i'll have to do a little more reading on that subject. anyway, maybe i'll meet someone who is learning veganic farming and wants to move to the camden/cherry hill area, and wants to go in on a farm together. that'd be perfect.

i wish i was learning a bit more about larger scale farming than just a simple homestead with only hand tools, but you take what you can get, right? there's a nice guy who sells at the farmers market who has 4 interns on a 3 acre farm that uses more than hand tools. they also have some interesting methods that seem to work better than what i've been dealing with at the homestead. i might ask to observe one of these days. it just seems like i'm interning at "gardening" than at "farming" *sigh* well, at least i'm making some money. the house sitting part is going to be nice, as i'm guaranteed 50 bucks a day instead of making approximately 3.33/hour.

initially, the agreement was "i provide 20 hours of work a week (for education and living in the basement) and anything over that, i make $10/hr" and earlier in the season, it was just so rainy that my hours were ridiculously low, and some days i'd go home a day earlier or arrive a day later. one week, i actually made only $5. after the 2nd time, when she sent me home on friday morning (if i would have known she was serious about my going home, i would have left on thursday night. i thought she was just joking.) i asked her if we could switch it to my providing 4 hours a day, and she agreed. that's been so much better. (i felt like i was losing $40 each time i worked a 4 day week. i really did feel like i was being taken advantage of. sure my stuff was in her basement, but she wasn't providing education, and i wasn't there to use the energy/water. it's not like she'd otherwise be renting the room to someone else.)

as for the house sitting part, if you ask me, $50 dollars a day for taking care of a dog, a cat, 20 chickens, a dozen or so youngster chicks, a dozen sheep, and a dozen ducks and all the corresponding crap they produce is a bit low. particularly when you take in to account we pay dog sitters $45/day for 3 visits, where she really only has to let sadie out in to the yard, and fill a bowl once a day, and can then go about her business for the rest of her 23 hours. wrangling one dog that knows commands is much much easier than trying to get freaked out ducks into their house at nighttime so they don't get eaten. aah well. this is what i agreed to. i gotta accept it. it's better than no job, right?

gosh. this got to be really long. i guess that happens when you only update once a month. :-p sorry.

and for that matter, the "object at rest" part of inertia.

trying to drag a cart full of sheep crap in absolutely saturated soil is nearly impossible.

ok. now that i've had a chance to catch my breath and re-hydrate, it's time to move the poop-filled chicken bedding that's inside their house to their absolutely disgusting over-saturated yard. it'd be nice if there was a people-sized doorway between the two to make this a little easier instead of having to put it on a cart and move it 10 feet and then unload the cart. (and then it's feeding time.)

and here i was planning on travelling to willow grove to pick up some raw chocolate bars that nature's harvest is oh-so-kindly donating to tomorrow's podcast recording. but i highly doubt i'd be able to do the chicken house, all the feeding and shower and then drive over to willow grove by 8 pm. i guess i'll just have to go up before the recording tomorrow. (ohgod, we're going to be late again, i can just see it now.)

next on the agenda is to find a participant who lives/works/plays and or travels through willow grove, so they can be our "nature's harvest contact" guh. i am not looking forward to going 2 hours out of the way for a few chocolate bars. why did i ever get myself into this mess? (at least they sell sheese. gonna get mahself some o'dat. OHYEAH!)

i got the job, i got the job, i got the job!

she was waiting for my references to get back to her, and only one had gotten back (a guy i used to work for back in 2001-02), and as soon as she hung up with him, she called me and offered it to me.

suthrncan did you keep getting a busy signal? :-( (i don't think she has call waiting. which leads me to believe she doesn't have the internets either.)

so that means, co-mods, feel free to bring on more help if you need it. it'll only be until mid-september. (the job goes til very early sept, and then we're going to the west coast immediately after) particularly vegancooking, unless you guys can handle the queue yourselves. (or retired mods, if you wanna come back for a few months, that'd be lovely.)

YAY!!!

on friday afternoon, less than a half hour before we were planning on leaving for Massachusetts, sadie came in with a 2 inch gash on her right front leg. we brought her to the vet, and they had to put her under to sew her up. :-( so she came home with a pink bandage on her leg and was still waking up. we were waiting in a room near where she was waking up, and they let her cry for a half hour before we got to hold her. (is that freaking normal? geez!) p.s. it was 400 dollars to fix her up. ouch!

so for the rest of the night, she didn't have control of her muscles, so she went to bed without going to the bathroom. :-/ she leaked a little on the crappy comforter. at least it was the crappy comforter, and not the nice one. we were told she was intubated, so might have a sore throat, so we gave her some pumpkin puree for breakfast with her pills. i cooked lentil and carrot soup to feed her later in the day. i soaked some of her kibble and mixed the soup and some more pumpkin with that.

she hasn't eaten any of her hard kibble, so i don't know if she's just being a diva, or if her throat is still sore. we have more soup, so we'll give her that for breakfast tomorrow. tonight we took off her bandage, and for some reason there was a strip of tape doing nothing but sticking to her fur. she got angry when scott pulled it off. it took a lot of fur off. (what moron puts a 4-5 inch long piece of tape on a leg that's covered in fur? a piece of tape that does nothing in fact? nothing but distress a dog that already had enough done to her leg already? geez! we're going to look for another vet in the area.)

i hope she gets over the whininess. i'm afraid she realised that we were very lovey dovey on friday and saturday whenever she whined, so hey, i'll keep whining. i'll get soup out of it! hahaha.

she's such a tough girl though. she didn't show any sort of pain before we brought her to the vet. all of a sudden there was blood on scott's pants after she greeted him.

anybody know how to forward hundreds (thousands?) of e-mails from one gmail account to another?

i made filters for all future e-mails, but it'd be nice to have past e-mails be over there too.

::edit:: http://www.howtogeek.com/forum/topic/batch-forwarding-old-gmail-messages

:-) yay!

the fact that you have to unscreen a comment in order to reply to it.

why does LJ not realise that there might be instances where a user would want to protect the identity of a commenter while responding to their comment. GAH!

when i went to the doctor to see about my hair loss and other random things, he sent me to get a blood test/urinalysis, and everything came back ok except he said i had blood in my yellow stuff. (turns out i went to the labs a few days before aunt flo arrived. so i "have to go" again in a few weeks)

but he kept going on and on about my cholesterol, which was 118 (i guess it didn't sink in to his brain that i don't eat anything that contains cholesterol. heh.)

but the good thing is that my thyroid levels and B12 were fine. (as was my kidney and liver and blood counts) so at least i don't have any hypothyroidism or anything. i guess the hair loss is just from my heavy bun after all. i hope it comes back. it's so weird. it's all concentrated just to the right of the center of my forehead. i have figured out a way to tie my hair to spread the weight through to all of the strands. (an actual knot in my hair and the ends are wrapped around the knot and secured with the band) the bun in my icon is from 3 years ago, so it's much bigger now.

i made a post on a reeeally long hair community asking for advice, and i got some really really cute ideas. i just wish i wasn't lazy. haha.

so i guess in a couple weeks i'll know if i really do have bloody pee.

so... on the day of our rehearsal dinner (3 and a half years ago) my sewing machine had some part inside snap. i haven't brought it to get repaired, and i was planning on doing so. but my mom (embroidery nut) told me her first embroidery machine was languishing in my sister's (walk-in) closet.

so. she (mom, not sister) totally told me i could have it. so not only can i now sew the shiitake that has been piling up for 3.5 years, but i can add flourishes, and i can also program it to embroider patches or other designs on to pretty much anything!!!! w00t w00t!

and i can do some cool stuff and possibly sell it on etsy too. yay for extra income. yay for family members who upgrade!

i've made a terrible decision to test cookie recipes for 2 different cookie cookbooks at the same time. *looks angrily at scale*

so if you want a care package, e-mail me your address. (supercarrot at gmail) and maybe some time in the near future a box of cookies will show up on your doorstep.

luckily the one book is wrapping up in the next month, but that means i'll probably be baking a lot from that book in the next few weeks. (the other book still has a ways to go, so i can space those out a bit)

p.s. if you have allergies, lemme know

hey, can you guys go to change.org and vote on financial support for small/beginning farms? this would make it so much easier for us to start a farm. (dude!)

as well as appointing an organic friendly head of dept of agriculture? thanks. <3

and if your belief system allows it, stop animal agriculture subsidies. (if they're not subsidizing veggies, why subsidize non-veggies? everything should be sold at the price it takes to produce. why should our tax money be hidden in the price?)

thanks! i love you all!

we just saw this last night! it was amazing!!!!!!

it's like this generation's rocky horror. (too bad lionsgate can't see it for what it is. they're totally embarrassed by it.) i'd be willing to bet 1/3 of the crowd we watched it with were dressed up as characters from the movie. it was so fun!

and paul sorvino came down from scranton to talk with the crowd too. he had to leave after the Q&A, so we didn't get his signature, but we got the signatures of darren lynn bousman and terrance zdunich on a little poster card.

they have a website up (http://www.repo-opera.com/) so check if there's a showing near you, but if not, the DVD is going to be coming out on jan 20th. (blu-ray too) they were talking how amazing it looks on blu-ray, since they recorded it in HD. (and they recorded everything in one month!!!!)

they said if there's enough demand, they might even be able to have a few stage shows.

they also said that if you need to find carpool mates, sign up at their forum and find them there. go see it, it's totally worth it!
